Pack 825 Pinewood Derby 2013

Where: OUMC

When: Saturday February 9

Check-in (required): 10:00-11:30am

Race & Awards: 2-4pm

Rules
  • I've emailed the rules, and also hope to upload them here - please have a look and follow them. The overall aim is to make the Derby a fun and fair learning experience for all the Scouts.
  • Arguably the most important rule is this one:

2. Parents are asked to REFRAIN from DIRECT WORK on building the cars. Parental participation as teachers, supervisors and coaches is strongly encouraged, but this event should have the desired benefit as a learning activity for the SCOUT. Most of the labor must be his own.

a. The use of power tools, especially cutting tools such as table saws, band saws, etc., is discouraged. These are extremely dangerous in the hands of Cub Scouts, and only encourage more parent participation than is necessary. The use of hand tools such as hand saws, coping saws, sanding blocks, planes, etc. is a part of advancement activities for all ranks, and should be encouraged for Derby building.

Awards
  • We have four Pack-level categories for awards (1st, 2nd and 3rd place)
    • Most Original
    • Best Craftsmanship
    • Fastest
    • Fastest – 100% Scout Built
  • The award winners in the first three categories (Most Original, Best Craftsmanship and Fastest) go on to compete in the Orange District Pinewood Derby Competition.
  • The Fastest – 100% Scout Built category is for our Pack only, winners do not compete in the Orange District Competition.
  • We also have den-level awards (1st place only). The den awards, which are for our Pack only i.e. winners do not compete in the District competition, are:
    • Fastest – Tiger Den
    • Fastest – Wolf Den
    • Fastest – Bear Den
    • Fastest – Webelos I Tues Den
    • Fastest – Webelos I Wed Den
    • Fastest – Webelos II Den

One Award Per Scout
  • The Pack has a policy of one Pinewood Derby award per Scout. So for example if your Scout places in the top three in two or more Pack categories e.g. Most Original and Fastest, I will ask you to pick the category you want the award in. You will then receive an award in that category only, and compete in that category only at the District competition. Another example would be that if your Scout wins a Pack award for Fastest (1st, 2nd or 3rd), they are not eligible to win the award for Fastest in their den.

Until Saturday February 9
  • Have a great time supporting your Cub as he finishes his car
  • For the inevitable little disasters which happen along the way, we keep a supply of extra cars if you need a replacement kit
  • I have the digital scale we use for weigh ins and the template box for sizing. If you need to use them please feel free to email me to arrange a time to stop by my house to use them. My email is mpr1020@yahoo.com.

Saturday February 9
  • Car check-in is required and is from 10-11:30am at OUMC (where we have Pack meetings). Please note you have to check-in your car to take part in the Pinewood Derby. Cars will be checked for size, weight, wheel shape and general adherence to the rules. If a car doesn't pass inspection the Scout has until the end of check-in at 11:30am to modify it to fix the problems.
  • You can send your car with someone else to check in, but if you do this it is important to be absolutely certain that it meets the size and weight specifications. Only the Scout is allowed to make modifications.
  • After you check your car in it will be impounded until race time.
  • At 11:30am check-in finishes and everyone apart from event volunteers needs to leave OUMC please. From 11:30am - 1pm I get all of the info loaded into the computer, check the electronics, and the judges (from outside Pack 825) come in for Most Original and Best Craftsmanship. This is a busy time so I ask that no one other than specifically identified volunteers be in the church at this time.
  • The race starts at 2:00pm and we are generally done within two hours. Each car gets to race in 3 heats (once in each of the three lanes on the track) and the cars with the fastest total race time (heat 1 time + heat 2 time + heat 3 time = total race time) are the winners. To be eligible for Most Original or Best Craftsmanship the car must complete at least one of the heats i.e. it has to cross the finish line.
  • The top three cars in Fastest, Most Original and Best Craftsmanship will be impounded until the District Event.

Saturday March 9 - Orange District Pinewood Derby Event
  • This is for nine Pack winners - 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Most Original, Best Craftsmanship and Fastest categories.
  • Check-in is at 8:30am, and the Event lasts until 3pm
  • The venue is Christ United Methodist Church, 800 Market Street, Chapel Hill, NC, 27516. This is in Southern Village.
